The Perfect, Guilt-Free Fall Dessert: Cranberry & Apple Crisp

Whoever says summer is the best season for fresh fruit, we challenge you to try this recipe. Fall is prime time for a variety of fruits, including two of our favorites: Jonathan apples and fresh cranberries, which are now available at McGonigle’s Market! To show you just how delectable these can be, we’re bringing you a dessert that is both (nearly) guilt-free and simple as can be! Try it out, and say hello to fresh fall flavors!

Cranberry & Jonathan Apple Crisp


Inspired by Original Recipe: Emril’s Apple Crisp


For the Base:

  • Unsalted butter (for baking dish)
  • 2 ½ – 3 lbs Jonathan apples from McGonigle’s Market
  • 12 oz fresh cranberries from McGonigle’s Market
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 3 Tbsp. all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 1/4 tsp. grated orange zest
  • 1 Tbsp. fresh orange juice

For the Crisp Topping:

  • 6 Tbsp. butter, cut into small pieces
  • 2/3 cup all-purpose flour (spooned & leveled)
  • 2/3 cup rolled oats
  • 3/4 cup packed light-brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp. salt

Cooking Instructions

fresh-cranberries-crisp-dessert-mcgonigles-market-kcLooking at the ingredients, this may seem like a lot, but once you’ve picked them up from Mcgonigle’s, it’s smooth sailing from here. First, preheat your oven to 375 degrees and butter your 9×13 inch baking dish, and then start with the base.

In a large bowl, combine apple wedges, cranberries, sugar, flour, vanilla, and orange zest/juice. Toss these together and pour into baking dish. Next up is the crisp topping. Take a separate large bowl and combine all the ingredients. Using an electric mixer, mix on low until large crumbs form and then sprinkle these on top of your mixture in the baking dish. Pretty easy, huh?

Lastly, pop this in the oven for 55-60 minutes, or until the crisp topping is browned and the juices are bubbling at the edge of the dish. Let stand for 10-15 minutes and enjoy!

Helpful Hint: If you are serving this at a dinner party, make it ahead of time and throw it in the oven right before you sit down for dinner. This way, you’ll achieve perfect timing and the mouth-watering smell will ensure that your guests save room for the big finale!
