It isn’t all fun when Old Man Winter comes calling, but the slew of new winter beers makes the cold just a bit more bearable. McGonigle’s carries some tasty seasonal samplings that will be sure to please the palate. Here is our list of the top six seasonal beers to try this season.
MOTHER’S UNCANNY ALE – Springfield, MO
Style: American Pale Ale (APA)
Amber gold with just a bit of a haze, the American and English malts provide a nice balance to the stronger American and New German hops that dominate this classic American pale ale. Slightly maltier than some pale ales, but with no bitterness, you’ll pick up on citrusy notes like mandarin and a hint of grapefruit. The medium body stays light and the finish is dry and clean.
ODELL ISOLATION ALE – Ft. Collins, CO
Style: Winter Warmer
Isolation Ale – a sweet-caramel malty ale balanced by a subtle crisp hop finish. Malt dominates at first, with hops playing second fiddle. As it warms, hops and spices come through stronger and linger in the aftertaste. Mild aroma features hints of woodsy hops with lightly sweet caramel malts. This brew finishes dry with a moderate bitterness. The aftertaste is of spicy and woodsy hops with a hint of caramel sweetness and bread in the background.
SHINER CHEER – Shiner, TX
This old-world Dunkelweizen is brewed with Texas peaches and roasted pecans. The spices and fruit really come through in the aroma including a hint of cinnamon. It pours a clear rich amber color with a thin white head. Definitely fruity with a light, smooth mouthfeel. This one is perfect for sipping in front of a crackling fire.
FOUNDERS BREAKFAST STOUT – Grand Rapids, MI
Style: American Double / Imperial Stout
While we can’t say beer for breakfast is recommended, if ever there was a breakfast beer, Founders Breakfast Stout would be it. Brewed with an abundance of flaked oats, bitter and imported chocolates, and two types of coffee, this creamy stout has an intense fresh-roasted java aroma and the thick, cinnamon-colored head is even reminiscent of a fancy coffee froth. This jet black beer delivers notes of dark chocolate, espresso, and malt with a hint of bitterness. If you like coffee, you’ll probably like this java-inspired gem.
BOULEVARD SNOW AND TELL – Kansas City, MO
Style: Scotch Ale / Wee Heavy
A perfect winter beer for curling up by the fireplace, this flavorful Scotch ale features prominent toffee and caramel notes with just a hint of smokiness – compliments of the aged oak barrel. The hops are very light and hidden leaving behind a smooth, sweet, subtle spiciness.
