FAQs

Will your store hours stay the same during the clearance sale?

Mostly. Our store hours will stay the same until McGonigle’s closes on Thursday the 13th of February. Monday-Saturday: 8-6. We will no longer open on Sundays until Fareway takes over.

When will the switchover from McGonigle’s to Fareway take place?

McGonigle’s Market will close on Thursday, February 13th. The market will close for a brief period and will reopen as a Fareway store as well as McGonigle’s Kitchen and Catering in early March. Exact reopening day TBA.

Who is Fareway?

Fareway is a family-owned, independent grocer with a reputation for quality meats and customer-centric service. Based out of Iowa, Fareway stores ranked 2nd in a 2017  Consumer Reports’ Supermarket Survey. They beat out some of the largest grocery chains in the nation including Hy-Vee which ranked 14th. It scored an ‘excellent’ rating in “price satisfaction, staff courtesy, check-out ease and meat and poultry quality,” according to the Des Moines Register. “It captured a ‘very good’ rating for cleanliness and ‘good’ in the remaining categories.”

Is McGonigle’s going away completely?

McGonigle’s Market may be coming to a close, but the name McGonigle’s will live on in Kansas City. Fareway is continuing to use the McGonigle’s name as the deli, BBQ to go, and catering arm will remain open once the store changes hands, still managed by longtime McGonigle’s employee, Randy Ross. The prepared food arm will continue to operate normally during the transition and the market will reopen as Fareway Meat Market and McGonigle’s Kitchen + Catering BBQ once the changeover is complete.

Will Fareway carry the same products as McGonigle’s?

While many of the staple features that McGonigle’s is known for will be available – including a quality fresh meat counter – Fareway’s inventory will not 100% match McGonigle’s. If there is a unique product that you love at McGonigle’s, our clearance sale is a great time to stock up and save!

Will Fareway have a meat counter?

Yes. Fareway is well known for its high quality meat counters. In a 2017 Consumer Reports Supermarket Survey, they scored an “excellent” rating for their meat and poultry selection and quality.

Will Fareway ship meat?

Fareway does ship meat through its online meat market.

What will happen to Mike?

Mike is going to take some time off, spend quality time with his family, and think about his next adventure.

What will happen to Joanie?

Joanie is going to take some time off, spend quality time with her Grandkids, travel and think about her next adventure.

What will happen to Randy?

Randy will continue to operate the prepared food side of McGonigle’s in the same location. Fareway is continuing to use the McGonigle’s name as the deli, BBQ to go, and catering arm will remain open once the store changes hands. The prepared food arm will reopen as Fareway Meat Market and McGonigle’s Kitchen + Catering BBQ once the changeover is complete.

What will happen to the rest of the longtime McGonigle’s employees?

McGonigle’s amazing employees made the store what it was. Many of them will be employed by Fareway and will continue to work at 79th and Ward Pkwy. Some of them will be moving on to their next great adventure.

I have a gift card. Do I need to use it before McGonigle’s closes?

It would be amazing if you would support McGonigle’s with your business by using the gift card before they close. However, if that’s not possible, Fareway will continue to honor McGonigle’s gift cards in 2020.

I have an event scheduled with catering. How will it be affected?

Your event will not be affected. McGonigle’s catering service will continue to operate as it has with a slight name change: McGonigle’s Kitchen and Catering.
